Legal System of the Five Kingdoms
The legal system of the Five Kingdoms is quite complex and a constantly evolving animal. We have started with a very simplified take on ancient roman law with a bit of other cultures thrown in. Players will constantly be working on adapting the laws and legal system to suit the feel of the game and so anyone with interest in this would do well to take up a lawyer or judge character.
Laws
Twelve Tables Of Law
The Twelve Tables of Law is a guideline for Judica on how to deal with the various crimes in the five kingdoms. Forever being updated and changed, the twelve tables are the precident upon which all judgements are made.
Crimitorius
The Crimitorius of Mirabilis is the guidelines of what is legal and what is not in the five kingdoms.
List of Fines
The Fines list is a guide for Judica when placing fines in criminal and civil cases.
Senita Legalis
The Senita Legalis is the legal body of judges in Mirabilis. Working from the Legal Assembly of the senate they uphold the laws and foundations of Mirabilis as instructed by the Holy Seat. In order to be appointed to the position of Judica, one must have a background in law (diplomat, lawyer, etc) and have served in the courts for a time to proove your knowledge of the legal systems.
Imprisionment
Those charged with or found guilty of crimes within the five kingdoms, may be subject to imprisonment. For those simply awaiting trail this term has a maximum of one week (one IRL week) and at the end of this you must be brought to trial or given your freedom until trial can be arranged. (ie: you don't get off, but you get bail until trial) Those who have been found guilty, have no maximum for imprisionment, depending on the crime involved one may find themselves imprisioned for life. (Players may choose to continue with this character or let them roster or die) Luckly, there are guidelines for imprisionment and the Judica will not for example deliver a life sentance for stealing bread from the market. (the empire does not want to pay to feed you for life for such a small crime) Often the Judica will instead make restitution through a series of fines or indentured servitude.
If at any time you feel the legal system is being abused, remember there are appeals and in the rare event staff can interject if need be.
